"Perhaps not, but something is troubling you, Sherai. And seeing as we're in the same boat, I figured we could at least talk."
She remains quiet for quite some time, and it almost seems as though she won't respond, but eventually, she does. "I'm not meant to be a leader," she admits. "I never was. My impulses control me far more than anyone knows, than I myself understand." She pauses again, then looks down at one of her hands, which reaches up and brushes the cut on her cheek. When she speaks again, her voice is low as though she's afraid to say the words aloud. "I may be the downfall of what we're trying to save."

Her gaze slowly focused on his, but this time, it wasn't as closely guarded as before. "But what if it kills them? What if the nightmares that haunt my sleep, the ones I've lied about their return, what if they come true?" Her voice is hardly a whisper, and for the first time, her love for her clansmen and the drive that's born of the wild battle in her gaze. "All because I feel like a caged animal?"

Ib starts slightly at the touch like a startled animal, looking at him quickly as her gaze searches his face, caramel eyes vivid against the pale furs around her shoulders. After a moment, she speaks, her voice low. "Why did you come so far alone? What about the tribes?"
