Aru started the fire, though now he was hesitant. "I hope he won't be upset that I shifted..."
Zay jolted in bed, drawing a sharp breath as he fell still a moment, taking small breaths as his eyes slowly blinked awake, hazy.

Aru finished with the fire, turning and looking at her and pursed his lips. Hesitantly, he stepped forward and took her hand, the feathers on his arms and head flattening a little as he took a breath, offering a smile.
Zay gathered his bearings, rolling over and swinging his legs off the bed, letting out a soft breath of air and rolling his shoulders, wincing a little and worked his bad arm for a moment. Standing, he shuffled to the door, running his hand over his face and leaned against the door frame, icy eyes finding Avery, then Aru at her side, and his eyes widened as he stared. Aru shied back a little, tucking his chin low as he braced for a scolding, though none came.
"Aru?" Zay murmured, looked at their hands then Avery.
Aru started at the gentleness of his tone and looked at him, eyes widened.

Entwining her fingers with his gently, her expression softens, head shifting a bit as footsteps reach her ears, listening hard, trying to pinpoint X'Zayvean
"Aru?"
Smiling lightly, she squeezes Aru's hand, half nod "Zay. Did you sleep well?"

"Zay. Did you sleep well?"
"I-I slept fine," he said after he nodded, forgetting for a moment that he couldn't see. He stepped forward, bare feet quiet on the floor as he knelt down in front of them a few feet away. "Did something happen while I was asleep?"
Aru shook his head. "No, sir. Miss Avery just needed help checking the traps while you slept, so I-I thought I would help her," he said quickly, looking down.
Zay's expression softened. "Don't look so afraid, you're not in trouble."
"B-but I broke a promise. I promised not to change--"
"You did it for good reason." His voice lowered as Aru's feathers ruffled, and he held out his arms. "Come here."
Aru straightened, chin quivering a little before he let go of Avery's hand and ran to Zay, wrapping his feathered arms around his neck. "I'm sorry."
Zay stood, picking him up with him despite the protest in his arm and back. "You're fine. Besides, I shouldn't have made you stay that way for so long." He looked to Avery. "Sorry I slept so long."

"That's good." Avery murmurs, stilling when he moves closer to them
"Did something happen while I was asleep?"
"No, sir. Miss Avery just needed help checking the traps while you slept, so I-I thought I would help her,"

Eyes wavering when she feels Aru's hand pull from hers, her gaze turns wistful at their words spoken, arm dropping

"It's quite all right." she murmurs, forcing a smile "You needed it."

He frowned slightly, eyes studying, but he stepped over, gently grasping her hand and kissing her cheek, leaning back a little. "I'm sorry I didn't tell you sooner," he murmured, and Aru laid his head on his shoulder.
