He snorted. "I'm not so sure about that, kiddo."
"But you are!" Aru looked at him. "You beat up those guys before the fires."

A smirk played at his lips as he leaned back. "I'll take the wound over dying."
Aru smiled a little, though wasn't certain about what was going on. Quietly and on light feet, he stood and stepped over to Zay, climbing into his lap and sitting there with knees drawn up and leaning against him. Zay let out a soft breath of air as he shifted his weight to ease his side.

Aru raised his head and looked at her, feathers flattening a little. "They didn't want me around." his voice grew a little softer as he looked at his hands. "If they're still alive after the fires, I don't know where they could be."
"Have you been away from people that long?"
Zay hesitated, looking down, having never talked to someone other than Aru about the past. Aru looked up at his silence and gently tugged on his sleeve to urge him to talk. He looked at the boy, who gave a small nod, then took a breath and looked at Avery, though he was still guarded. "Someone other than Aru and you, and not counting bandits, yes. It's been four years."

Aru shrugged. "They wouldn't want me. Besides," he smiled a true smile. "I have you and Zay, and you guys are all the family I need."
Zay's expression flickered with something but it was gone as quick as it had come.
"Four years. That's quite a long time."
He smiled thinly. "Yeah. Funny thing, the last contact I had was a wildling who tended my wounds. I don't remember his name, nor his face, but I remember a brown wolf and the snow." Zay looked out the window, rubbing the stubble on his jaw. "Funny how time steals memories."

Aru nodded, laying his head down again. "I'd like to think so," he said quietly, venturing with a smile still on his face. "It'd be nice."
"A wildling?"
"Rogue wildling. Most live in small communities and stick to their own, but this one was a loner," Zay shrugged. "It's been a long time."
