"Did you chew at least two of each leaf?"
Zay gave a small nod, jaw working as he finished the leaves and to keep quiet as she pressed against his wound. Enzo hopped from the chair to his thigh, tilting his head as he watched Avery closing, taking perch again near his shoulder and ruffled his feathers with a soft squawk. Zay reached up slowly and stroked the bird's feathers, murmuring quietly, "I'll live."

"I'll live."
"Sorry." Avery murmurs apologetically to both him and the hawk, touch becoming gentler as she finishes wrapping the wound, sits back once done "There."

"There."
Zay gave a small nod. He straightened in the chair slightly, though his gaze still had a feverish haze. The fever itself remained low and not severe, but the effects were still hitting him. Taking a breath, he tried to relax, the hawk ruffling his feathers and tucking its head under a wing, and the bird's presence seemed to have been helping. After a few long moments, Zay finally spoke, though it was a whispered murmur, half delirious from pain and exhausted, and half clear headed from the medicine. "How can I repay you?"

"How can I repay you?"
Eyes flicking over him, Avery frowns softly at no sign of apparent change before she tilts her head slightly at the bird. Studying it closely, her eyes widen in the corners when a memory flashes across her mind, face pales slightly. Pulled out of her thoughts by the sound of his voice, she shakes her head hard, gaze snapping to the man in front of her. Opening her mouth to reply, she pauses "You..." she has half the mind to tell him he can repay her by not leaving, but sighs softly, settling on another answer, one more rational "You can get some more rest."

"You... You can get some more rest."
A hand rose and rubbed his eyes, pausing with a pinch at the bridge of his nose before traveling down his face. His eyes remained closed. "Be honest," he grumbled. "I've taken your bed, your food, your medicine. And you've given me your time," his voice lowered to a whisper as he half-faded into sleep before his thoughts came back to him. Iceberg eyes opened and trained themselves on her. "I'm in your debt. How can I repay it?"

"Be honest. I've taken your bed, your food, your medicine. And you've given me your time. "I'm in your debt. How can I repay it?"
Stilling, her eyes widen a moment before she looks away, small half smile, gaze growing wistful before it fades "Even if I told you, it wouldn't happen. And why would it? We're strangers. I'm a knight, you're not. So." she inhales softly "You can repay me by telling me the stew was horrible so I have a reason to let you leave and it won't sting as much."

For a heartbeat, the briefest moment in time, his face and expression seemed to become open with a ghost of a smile showing at the corner of his lips, though as quick as it had come, it was underneath the ice again. "Even as a rogue, I can't lie," he responded quietly, studying. A moment later, he added, "You want me to stay."

"Even as a rogue, I can't lie. You want me to stay."
Catching the almost smile out of the corner of her gaze, her eyes widen, face flushing when it finally hits her that she's looked at his chest at least three times in the past 24 hours, voice barely audible as she speaks, looking at him halfway, cheeks red with embarrassment "I do." she admits, standing to clear the table, trying to keep busy, unsure "Apparently knights can't lie either." she half states, hand stretching out to grab the bowl in front of him

"I do. Apparently knights can't lie either."
His hand rolled smoothly from its resting place on the table and grabbed her wrist, though the touch was light, gentle. He still studied her, taking in her appearance, her embarrassment, and something else that lied underneath of it all. It had reminded him of someone else, someone he knew in the past, but he couldn't place the face entirely. He knew that the image had a bad memory attached to it, but somehow it didn't surface. Instead, it brought a remembrance of warmth, of something long lost, and after a moment, he let her go and shook his head, looking away.
"Apologies," he murmured.

"Apologies,"
Freezing when his hand grasps her wrist, her eyes waver before she slowly looks at him, gaze trying to understand, opens her mouth to speak, slowly closes it when he lets go, straightens, disappointment filling her eyes, small laugh, turns away, bowl in her hand "For what? It was my misunderstanding." she murmurs, carries the bowl over to a bucket full of water

"For what? It was my misunderstanding."
He shook his head. "No, you misunderstood nothing," he whispered, running a hand over his face again. A hand moved to his pocket where the stone rested, and he studied the floor for several minutes. Zay toiled with himself, trying to understand how his facade was slowly crumbling, but he came up with no answer. Growing uneasy, he took his shirt and pulled it over his head, hissing slightly as his wound protested, rubbing his shoulder were the burn mark laid. Beside him, Enzo shifted positions.

"No, you misunderstood nothing,"
Hands stilling in the water, her fist slowly clutches the rag tightly. Hearing a hiss, her gaze slowly finds him, though she stays kneeling in the floor "I didn't?" she murmurs, voice just as quiet, hope flickering in the back of her eyes, overshadowed by doubt "But you're still going to leave, aren't you?"

"I didn't? But you're still going to leave, aren't you?
He shook his head slowly, settling back again, looking over and meeting her gaze. "Leaving won't do me any good," he murmured. "Today has shone that I'm still missing so many parts to the puzzle I've thrown myself into. I need to look at things differently." He looked down towards the floor. "My old habits are going to die hard."

"The puzzle?" She echoes, pausing a moment before she drops the bowl in the water and walks over, sitting by him, eyes on his, sticks hand out slowly "Well. As a knight, I vow to keep you healthy as long as you are here, and as long as I am able." she adds on as a afterthought, worry flickering across her gaze

"Well. As a knight, I vow to keep you healthy as long as you are here, and as long as I am able."
Zay studied her, then her hand, then lightly shook his head as he exhaled, though it sounded like an attempt to cover a small laugh. "You knights and your vows," he murmured. "It should be me giving a vow or something for what you've done." His eyes then went to her hand and, ignoring the gesture as a shake, slowly he took it in his, giving it a small squeeze. "Thank you, Avery."
