She stares at him blankly for a minute, then her eyes widen as it registers. "You want be to stay and lead?" she squeaks. "I-I couldn't, it's not my place to, even if I've been hoping to have a place--" she stops, realizing she starts to ramble thanks to Onyx's quiet groan nearby. Her throat bobs as she swallows. "I don't think they would accept me, Jakys."

"You could, and you'd be good at it." Jakys murmurs, voice level as he watches her calmly "They would if you took your place here, and married into the tribe. The people already accept you."

"But what of the last Sherai's followers? It was she who rid herself of me," she says quietly, looking away. "No one would want to marry a bastard, especially one who's original intentions was to forcefully take someone else's place."

Esper watches him closely as Onyx slips out of the tent to lay outside where it's cooler. She finds her words after a moment. "I don't understand how you could choose me," she says honestly. "Let alone why."

"Why?" Jakys murmurs, stepping towards her, hand sliding into hers "Because you're smart. Beautiful. One hell of a fighter, more so than me. Good with the people, just like your sister."

Her gaze moves to their hands, her fingers slipping between his with ease before her grey eyes travels back up to him. Her cheeks grow slightly rosy, unused to the compliments coming from someone other than her Ma'heege, and she offers a small smile. "You'd be the first to see any good," she says quietly. "Let alone see more than just a tainted bloodline."

Her eyes rake over him, tension and uneasiness fading as his hand brushes her cheek and her eyes close a moment. "I don't think you were delirious if you can remember."
