"Much better."
Onyx's eyes follow Jak closely, though his head remains straight. He doesn't speak for several long moments, gaze moving to Esperanto, who keeps her gaze turned away, and the wolf picks up on her thoughts and understands she wants nothing spoken to her. So instead, he turns his attention back to the princeling. "What reason have you to ask to see me?" He murmurs, voice low as he faces him. After a moment, though, he picks up Iniago's scent off if Jakys's cloak and his nose wrinkles.

"What reason have you to ask to see me?"
"Simple." Jakys starts, coming to a stop back in front of him "To determine whether or not you are fit to guard her, help her in times of need."

"Simple. To determine whether or not you are fit to guard her, help her in times of need."
"What makes you believe I'm unworthy?" he counters, eyeing him warily, though he doesn't back down. "She is my bond, and I'm willing to risk everything to keep her safe."

"What makes you believe I'm unworthy? She is my bond, and I'm willing to risk everything to keep her safe."
"Not you, specifically." Jakys murmurs, looking at him squarely "But there is another who makes me question your people's abilities."

He frowns deeply, studying before asking, "Would it by chance be the white Ma'heege?" he murmurs lowly, something flickering across his gaze.

"Would it by chance be the white Ma'heege?"
"Perhaps." Jakys mutters, studying him "You know Iniago?"

"Perhaps. You know Iniago?"
Onyx's lips twist into a wolf like snarl, eyes sharp. "The Alpha that has grown soft," he growls. "I cannot forget his face."

"He's your alpha?"
"To be technical, yes," he murmurs, jaw ticking a moment. "Before his bond, he was ruthless, wild, much like how his wildling as grown to become. Uncontrollable and a fearless leader. Even after he was bonded, choosing her, he kept his wild nature at heart. But after the first raids, when his Sheran vanished, he grew soft on the new Sherai, and lost his bite. Even after a Ma'heege alpha bonds, they retain their position in their clan, meaning that they still have responsibilities., whether it's thwarting attempts for dominance or eliminating threats. But once that girl's father vanished, he became more human than Ma'heege." He gestures to the scar on his cheek. "When there is a traitor among the clans, they are to be slain without question. We take our loyalty serious, and to misuse it gives one no right to live. That traitor attacked our clan, and when he came to be rid of them, he stayed his fangs. He lost his ferocity that belongs to us and our brethren, and now I can hardly consider him my alpha any longer. Because of his weakness, he left scars on his people and let a traitor run free in our forest."

"I see." Jakys murmurs, looking between both him and Esper before he sighs, tilting his head "What would it take for me to get a Ma'heege?"

"I see. What would it take for me to get a Ma'heege?"
Esper looks over at him from the corner of her gaze, frowning, before she actually looks at him. "The Ma'heege and the Kaji'it have a pact that goes back hundreds of years. On our naming day after sixteen years, the Kaji'it is sent into the forest in search of the pack on the winter solstice armed with only a small pack of rations and a knife. Once the Kaji'it finds a Ma'heege, they are tested to see if they are in fact worthy of a bond, and many Kaji'it will go through two or three Ma'heege within the three days they have before finding a bond. Once a bond is made, or once the three days pass, the Kaji'it will return, with either a bond or empty handed, and they will remain unbonded for a majority of their lives. Some gain one later if they somehow aid a Ma'heege in grave danger or prove themselves otherwise, but on those accounts, it's rare."
"M'lady and I have bonded because she is of Wynn's blood, the line of Kaji'it that formed the pact in the beginning," Onyx adds. "Despite not being a clansman, she proved herself worthy to me, and as such, I took her as my own."

"So that means I have no chance of getting one." Jakys clarifies, sighing softly as he takes a step back from Onyx "Well, isn't that a shame."

"Unless one chooses you," Esper replies, "No. Why would a southern prince want a wolf? What of the Aben'neege?"

"Which is unlikely, right?" Jakys murmurs, sighing "A southern prince who is marrying the northern princess, and whose tribe will be merging with hers. Is it not right that he accept the ways of her clan, as a show of faith? Besides, the Aben'neege are as scarce as we are these days."

Esper is quiet a moment, eyes studying. "It depends on a person's point of view."
