"Its called a can opener. They were invented in 58 to open the cans safely."
"And how do you keep fruit in this can?" He looked inside in awe at the freshness. "Wouldn't it rot?"

"After a while yes. But add some water or juice and make sure the lids on there good. And itll keep. Though they do have expiration dates. " She looked up at him. "So how hard is it to make porridge?"

"Interesting." He started mixing the spices and the fruit together in a bowl. "Not hard at all. I just need some water and something to cook it in."

Aviva went to the cabinet and pulled a pot out before sitting it on the stove. "Will this work?"

"Will this work?"
He nodded and started inspecting the stove, trying to figure it out on his own. After a moment, he managed to turn it on, watching it and feeling the heat from it. He blinks, and adds in some water to boil. "all of this stuff is so.... bizarre. I'll never get used to it."

"I know what you mean! Before we moved here, I never imagined that people inlayed for a living. At least not the way you do. And I've never seen an instrument like yours. "

Atlas laughed quietly as he worked and shook his head. "No one inlays like we do-- we're Stonesworn, and it's rare that Stonesworn rise out of the underground. We're the oddballs."

"Are there more like you two? Stonesworn?"

"Oh, there's plenty," he answered, putting the rye into the water. "Many of us though prefer to stay underground. Being stonesworn has it's perks, but there are a lot who are born blind and find comfort being under the earth than above."

"So why did you choose to stay above land?"

The mirth faded from his expression as he watched the porridge, stirring it. "I wasn't around when it happened," he started. "But our home city was attacked by a rival king, and they took over our lives. My parents and Vane snuck out and ran to Ashborne, which is east of here. I was born there, though shortly after our father disappeared. Mother fell ill years later, and when the attacks started spreading to Ashborne, she moved us here." He forced a smile. "I can't say I can entirely complain, but we didn't entirely have a choice on coming above ground."

"I'm sorry to hear that. " studying him she exhaled. "Your parents must have been important to you."

"I don't remember enough of them." He turned the rye off and mixed the fruit and spices with it. "I vaguely remember Mom, but the person that was there the most was Vane."

"I don't have parent's. If I did I have no memory of them. I would give anything to know where I came from."

"Maybe you'll find out in time," he replied, putting some porridge in bowls for them all and garnished them with a couple slices of fruit. "But breakfast is finished." Atlas looked to Bri and Vane, leaning against the counter a moment. "Do we really want to wake them?"
