"Alright." She murmurs, stifling a laugh at the tug, follows him, stiffening a moment at his words, shakes head, tiny smile "Thank you for the offer of help, Aru. But I think I'll have to decline." she murmurs calmly, face softening "You can't be both Zay and my eyes."

Aru frowned. "Why not?" Zay sees really well, even if he's grounded. He sees with his ears and smell, I've seen him do it before. The only reason the bandits got him was because--" he stopped, frowned, and looked to the ground.

The boy warred with himself a moment, cheeks puffed as he weighed everything. "Because he was trying to protect someone he came across, a farmer, I think. The bandits were tearing away at the man's crops and harassing the man. And Zay didn't want what happened to him happen to the farmer, so he lured the bandits away."
Aru was on a roll now, the words tumbling out. "But the bandits had a bounty for him, from some tavern he had a mishap with the owner or something, I'm not sure, so they were more prepared to fight him than he was them. But running for days was hard, especially with his bad arm and back, and then he was struck and got hurt from one of their blades." His voice lowered slightly. "I wanted to help him more, because I can fight, but he made me swear not to change unless I was absolutely needed, and made me promise never to change in front of bandits."

"And who's to teach me? You?" Avery murmurs, deathly quiet, head tilting at the response to her question

"Bad arm and back?" she echoes, small pause at his tone, gaze wavers, reaches out and finds his shoulder, squeezes it gently "You are helping him. You're his friend, aren't you?" she asks, tiny smile "If someone is on their own, wherever they are, despite their circumstances, they get lonely. They need friends. By hiding, you're staying alive. If you were to get hurt, he would blame himself, and he wouldn't be the way he is now. You're keeping him human, he just hasn't realized it yet."

Aru nodded. "From the fire and the attack on his village." He started when she grabbed his shoulder and looked at her with wide eyes.
"You are helping him. You're his friend, aren't you? If someone is on their own, wherever they are, despite their circumstances, they get lonely. They need friends. By hiding, you're staying alive. If you were to get hurt, he would blame himself, and he wouldn't be the way he is now. You're keeping him human, he just hasn't realized it yet."
"I'm keeping him human...?" Aru echoed, confused and not fully understanding. "But he is human, he can't change like me."

Brows coming together at the mention of a fire, she purses her lips but pushes the news to the back of her mind, for now

I meant you were keeping him from slipping into the recesses of his mind, and you've kept him from being completely emotionless. If one doesn't have emotions, then they aren't really living. Being human, is about feeling, not just about your physiology." she states softly, dropping her hand "And, for keeping him human, I have to thank you."

Stilling at his statement, she slowly smiles, eyes closing a moment as she laughs softly "Right, that's what they do." she murmurs, tilting her head "Did you think you weren't human?"

He looked down and kicked a stone, resuming the search for traps. "When I was younger, my mother threw me out and said I wasn't human." He shrugged. "I thought that was why no one liked me, because I wasn't, so I thought I wasn't."
