"Is Avery okay...?"
"She's just not feeling the best right now, kiddo."
Hearing their voices faintly through the door and her thoughts, Avery trembles before she sits up slowly, face tearstreaked. Standing, she walks over and lifts her sword from where it rests, steps a low shuffle. Sinking back down onto the bed, she swallows thickly, breathing labored as she presses the tip of the metal against her stomach, blade turned back on herself. Hands tightening around the hilt, she gets the urge to plunge it forward but starts shaking when she can't get her arms to move, cry escaping as she drops Rizuin, hands finding their way to her face as he hits the floor with a thunk

Zay started when he heard the thump, and Aru jumped up to investigate, but he held his arm out to the boy, gesturing to the chicken soup on the fire. "No, stir that. I'll be back." Aru stared at him, startled, but nodded anyhow.
Walking over to the door, he hesitated, listening, and hearing the labored breathing he knocked before stepping inside. "Avery?" His eyes find her, her tear streaked face, then the sword in the floor. He stepped inside and closed the door, hurrying to her. "Avery, what's wrong."

"Avery? Avery, what's wrong."
Jumping at the knock, she lets out a small sob, tensing when she hears him move closer to her, shakes her head hard, hands still covering them as she cries "I can't have it." she whispers, voice cracking "This isn't the time. The war. We can't. I don't want to go through this right now. Please.." she makes out, shaking as she lowers her hands, tears escaping, face full of fear, muttering to herself, lost in the wave of aprehension

"I can't have it. This isn't the time. The war. We can't. I don't want to go through this right now. Please.."
At first, he was confused as he knelt in front of her, hands resting on the bed beside her, though among her ramblings, he finally understood. His eyes widened slightly, breath catching. "You mean that..." His voice trailed, and mentally he shook his thoughts away as his hands went to her face, wiping away the tears. "Av, I need you to calm down a little bit, you're not making much sense. Breathe and talk to me."

At his words her tears thicken, shaky sob, shakes her head hard again, crying though her hands clutch his "I'm scared." she whispers, lip trembling, face falls, grip on his in a vice like fashion "I'm terrified... Oh, god... Help me.." she makes out, barely audible "Tell me what I'm supposed to do, what you want.."

Gaze wavering at the kisses, she trembles, trying to catch her breath, lightheaded still "Look around us, X'zayvean." she starts, voice slipping "This war is tearing the world as we know it to shreds. This new world is made of nothing but fire, brimstone, ash, and blood.. And I could get called out at any time, now that my commander has deemed me eligible to fight again."

His mouth opened to respond, but he caught himself. His rogue side rose and threatened to pour out, to tell her to renounce her vows, to run with him, a speck of his old self. He swallowed hard and bit back the words, the selfish feeling, the guilt at the thought. That wasn't who he was now. Taking a breath, he gauged the best answer. Something came to mind. "If they should call, then I'll go instead," he said quietly, continuing before she could protest, "I'll travel and talk to the commander, and take your place. I can pass those tests and prove my worth, that I can guarantee. You could stay with Aru here, were the war has yet to touch. I'm willing to do whatever it takes to keep the both of you safe no matter the cost. You're all I have, and all that matters to me."

Face falling when her words are met with nothing but silence at first, she starts to pull back before she stiffens at his first statement, eyes widen, tears filling them slowly with each word uttered, one trailing it's way down her cheek, grasps his hands, shakes her head "You can't..." she whispers, voice breaking "You're wrong, you have Aru. If you leave, you could die. Then who would raise this child?" crying, she clutches at his hands weakly, small broken laugh "I'm not fit to be a mother, but you're a wonderful father. If you leave, what makes you think I could keep Aru safe? He's safer with you then me."

He paused, gently pulling his hands from hers and took her face in them, wiping her cheeks. "You're capable of so much more than you know, sweet heart. And I'm willing to do what it takes to show you your worth. You've thawed a heart, and in turn that heart wants to protect what it's gained."

Choking out a mix of a laugh and sob, she shakes her head slowly, timid smile, starting to calm down just enough to breath normally, but still tense "I don't see how. I'm distant, complicated, and I don't show emotions usually, unless i'm sleepwalking. I think this is my first time crying in years..."

We've given Aru a sibling," he leaned back a little, a small laugh of delight escaping as he pressed his forehead to hers, "and we'll be a slightly larger family."

Stilling, she swallows thickly at the kiss, gaze wavering before she blinks a few times to get the tears away, small halfhearted smile "We will..." biting her lip, she hesitates "Do you think we should tell him now?..."

Zay opened his mouth to speak, but stopped when he heard little footsteps outside of the door, and have gave a gentle smile and looked over. "Aru."
It remained quiet a moment. Then, Aru slowly opened the door and stepped inside, eyes slightly wide. "I-I'm sorry, I didn't mean to eavesdrop. I-I just wanted to make sure that she wasn't took sick....."
"It's all right." he held a hand out for him.
His feathers ruffled as he stepped over, then he looked at Av, face bright and awed. "I'm going to have a sibling?" he whispered, hope and joy in his voice. "Is it true?"

Small timid smile crossing her face, she grasps the ends of her shirt loosely "Well, I think so.. Surprise." she murmurs halfheartedly
