"That's what I must speak to you about. I hate to ask any more from you than what you gave, and I don't want either of us over staying our welcome, but she's in no condition to move too much for the next few days. Would it be too much to ask if she could stay until I return?"
"She's welcome to stay." Caspian starts lowly, quiet "But what about her duty to her people? Can she really just shirk those responsibilities?"

"She's welcome to stay. But what about her duty to her people? Can she really just shirk those responsibilities?"
"Before now, she wouldn't have been able to," he admits. "In fact, I don't like the idea of it myself, but I am only her Ma'heege. Our tribe is no longer one tribe. We are now what's left of two, the Rajir and the Kaji'it. We've been preyed upon by bandits, by the Legion from the north, and we grew weary. For us, the person more important than the Sherai or the Sheran is the wise woman, may her soul rest among the trees in peace. She told us our ways would no longer keep up alive, and as such, we must learn to change, to adapt, and over the years we've started that. We used to be travelers, nomads, following the herds, but as game grows then so do we. The elders have been talking of finding suitable land in the untamed and build ourselves a home to stay, to grow. That was what the late Sheran wanted." He pauses a moment, turning and looking outside. "But there are few who would not be able to survive by remaining still, by leaving behind the fire they have. And as much as I hate to admit it myself, Sherai is one of those. Even I struggle keeping her wild heart in line, and I know it's only a matter of time before even our bond could keep her still."
His lips purse and he looks back at Caspian. "She was told years ago she was to listen to her kahl, or her heart in common tongue, and for years she went against that to try to fulfill her duties to her people. But alas, her soul can't handle it. And since then, she has been plagued by nightmares of her tribe's downfall, and thinking it was because she wasn't trying hard enough she pushed even harder until it nearly put her under. And that was merely two moons ago. And it seems that the fates have had a different plan for her when the bandits came for her, and she fled, ending up here, the last place that any wildling should ever end up. But her place isn't to lead, that isn't her journey, at least, not anymore. And where the fates and her heart may decide to take her is their choice."

"I just hope she can handle the backlash that comes from running from your responsibilities." Caspian murmurs, voice growing faint before he shakes his head "If she stays here, it'll be hard for her, where she's a wildling."

"I know," he agrees quietly, looking down at his plate as he takes a deep breath. "But for now, there isn't much else we can do."

Silent a moment, Caspian weighs his words before answering "I'll keep her safe while you're gone. But, there's something we need to discuss, wolf."

"Of course," he says, gesturing for him to go on as he takes another bite. "What is it?"

"Of course. What is it?"
"Bonding." Caspian murmurs, eyes sharp as he watches him "Why haven't you found someone?"

"Bonding. Why haven't you found someone?"
At first, he thinks of the word bond as the connection he and Iberia have. "I am bound to Sherai as her Ma'heege," he says, confused. But then, it clicks, and he realizes Caspian means something else. "You mean to ask why I haven't found a mate."

"That's what I mean, yes." Caspian murmurs, shrugging

"That's what I mean, yes."
He looks down, pondering a moment. "I suppose I never truly had the chance to settle," he starts. "When a Ma'heege is bound, it becomes difficult for us to find mates, which is why the Ma'heege has to choose their companion wisely, as it can affect their futures afterwards." Iniago looks back up, golden gaze finding Cas's. "And being a Ma'heege alpha makes it more difficult as well."

"That sounds absolutely binding, and awful." Caspian states, frowning at the thought

"That sounds absolutely binding, and awful."
The wolf laughs a little. "To an outsider it would seem so, but I assure you, it's not as bad as it sounds." His face turns a little more lively. "Ma'heege mature faster, but we also live much longer. None of us truly find mates until after our companions have settled down. When we decide to form a bond, our loyalty to our companion becomes our focus, and we want nothing more than to see them succeed in whatever they set out to accomplish. It's through them that we meet others, and from there, find potential mates, but as an alpha, I must take extra care in my choice, as they become my better half in leading the pack when we return to them."

"But if you aren't returning to the pack, doesn't that mean you can choose whoever you want for your mate, when you want?"

He nods again with a small shrug. "Technically speaking, I could, yes."

"Technically speaking, I could, yes."
"So why don't you? Don't you deserve it?"
